Stop by anytime to make your own zine! It can be about your story, your family, your community, your relationship with your neighborhood, about someone else – anything you want it to be. We will have scanners and printers, all materials will be provided. We also encourage you to bring personal digital or physical materials you’d like to include in your zine, such as: pre-existing drawings, scans, hand written notes, digital photo copies of your family, friends, places (can be on your phone or laptop), voice notes, more craft materials, or anything else. This workshop is open to all ages.

We will also be showcasing zines created by Chinatown community members, including members of Think!Chinatown, Chinatown Art Brigade, Apex for Youth, and Grand Street Settlement, to highlight Chinese-American stories and histories.

This workshop is organized by Chris Deng and Tif Ng.

Wheelchair accessibility: To access the foyer, visitors in wheelchairs should request access with patron services and they will assist in navigating to the garden entrance located on Willet Street via a 200 foot pathway with a small slope to the garden entrance.

Magnum Foundation expands creativity and diversity in visual storytelling, activating new audiences and ideas through the innovative use of images. Through grant making, mentorship, and creative collaborations, we partner with socially engaged imagemakers exploring new models for storytelling.

Abrons Arts Center is a home for contemporary interdisciplinary arts in Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighborhood. A core program of the Henry Street Settlement, Abrons believes that access to the arts is essential to a free and healthy society. Through performance presentations, exhibitions, education programs and residencies, Abrons mobilizes communities with the transformative power of art.

Lower East Side History Month was founded ten years ago by local groups in the hope that a collective celebration of our stories and peoples would strengthen our sense of community. Honoring the history of this community together is one element in working collaboratively to sustain an inclusive LES – despite waves of change and displacement. The Lower East Side has been home to Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American, and Pacific Islander peoples, to LGBTQ communities, to artists, radicals, organizers, immigrants, refugees, and workers. In May, we celebrate their past stories and their presence today. Over 70 Lower East Side cultural and community groups, small businesses, and residents will host a variety of public events, exhibits, tours, and festivals. We invite you to celebrate the LES with us! See the 2023 Calendar of Events.
