Grantees Organize aka TAWLA collective and Tarweedeh Zine

“Tarweedeh is a tool of resistance, hope, and solidarity that came to exist through our belief in the power of images and self representation to create connections. Tarweedeh features some of the most talented photographers from/in Palestine, whom we're grateful to collaborate with and pray for their safety.” — aka TAWLA

aka TAWLA is a collective for photobook makers from the SWANA region, supporting photobook making and alternative narratives from the region. Organized by Arab Documentary Photography Program (ADPP) alums Abdo Shanan and Rehab Eldalil, the collective launched their first zine Tarweedeh last week at the Polycopies book fair at Paris Photo, where they also showcased books, dummies and zines by ADPP photographers and more.

Drawing inspiration from an encrypted style of Palestinian folk song, the Tarweedeh zine features work by: Maen Hammad, Randa Shaath, Samar abu Elouf, Nidal Rohmi, Tanya Habjouqa, Samar Hazboun, Ameen Abo Kaseem, Lina Khalid, and Nadia Bseiso

Zine design is by Reem Atia; drawings by Sabbagh and Maggie Ashraf; and printing at A La Maison printing.

Copies of Tarweedeh and other books from the aka TAWLA book table will be on view at Magnum Foundation’s upcoming December public programming – see here for information about those events.

Tarweedeh and the aka TAWLA book table were produced with support from the Magnum Foundation and the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture. The Arab Documentary Photography Program is a joint initiative of the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, the Prince Claus Fund, and the Magnum Foundation.
