Welcome Spring Magnum Foundation Fellow Yolanda Hoskey

Yolanda Hoskey

Magnum Foundation is pleased to announce Yolanda Hoskey as our newest Magnum Foundation Fellow. Throughout the Spring of 2024, Yolanda will split her time between supporting Magnum Foundation’s programming and pursuing her project True American, a thought-provoking portrait series focusing on the notion of the American Dream as it relates to the underprivileged and Black. Blending hyperrealism and documentary, True American weaves a captivating narrative that authentically highlights the resilience, strength, and diversity embedded in the pursuit of the American Dream within communities at the intersection of poverty and race — sparking essential conversations on identity, representation, and the universal pursuit of dreams within the fabric of American society.

As a visual storyteller, Yolanda Hoskey captures moments that transcend time, using photography as a medium to explore narratives and evoke emotions around race, culture, identity, society and the nuance of representation. With a background in Theatre Arts and Film, Yolanda brings a unique perspective to each photograph, weaving together stories that challenge and inspire. Having only started her photo journey in 2020, the self-taught image maker has been recognized by the likes of Fujifilm and her work has been published in The New York Times, Bloomberg and Aperture Magazine. In 2023, Yolanda became 1 of 50 cohorts selected globally in a Getty Images, first-of-its-kind, Creator Accelerator Program. She continues to push boundaries in the world of visual storytelling and combines artistic vision with a commitment to representation, aiming to change narratives and amplify underrepresented voices.

On receiving the fellowship, Yolanda shared, “through the Magnum Foundation Fellowship program, I hope to gain a level of insight and guidance that is only possible through a program of this kind. I am excited to be integrated into the foundation's community and learn in depth about the culture shifting work produced here. Being a part of this fellowship serves to make me a better artist, storyteller and image maker.”

A warm welcome to Yolanda!

The Magnum Foundation Fellowship (also known as the NYC Work-Study Fellowship) is a program offering a project production grant, mentorship, and arts administration experience to NYC-based early-career photographers and photojournalists. This fellowship is designed for early-career photographers looking for an opportunity to deepen, expand, and complete a New York City based project that speaks to social issues in NYC communities. In addition to producing a project, fellows gain arts administration by spending two days a week working in the Magnum Foundation office. Learn more here.

The Magnum Foundation Fellowship is made possible with the support of the Select Equity Group Foundation.
