Homicide is the leading cause of death among young black men in America. While African Americans comprise 13% of U.S. total population, they make up 40% of its murder victims. On a national average, for every 10 murders, four killers get away. In the largest cities in America the rates are even lower. The majority of homicides now go unsolved at dozens of big-‐city police departments. For example in 2008, police solved 35% of homicides in Chicago, 22% in New Orleans, and 21% in Detroit.
Visiting one of the most murderous and impoverished cities in the United States, Maxon photographs unsolved murder victims’ family members at the site of the incident.
