Alejandro Cegarra | Our Invisible War
Country of origin: Venezuela
Project location: Venezuela
Program: Magnum Foundation Fund
It happens every day, as sure as the sun rises over the biggest favela in Latin America - death is one of the few full time services that Caracas has.
The city seems at war with itself. It’s often not clear who is who. Who do you trust? Who is the enemy? What exactly is happening? All the time you’re looking over your shoulder; waiting for the next blow. But from where? The atmosphere and the impact of violence seem inescapable. People have begun to see it as normal.
This project is about the mother who lost her son for arguing with a gang member; the families who are incomplete because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time; the pools of blood early in the morning and the sound of the gunshots late at night. It’s a project about living in one of the most dangerous cities in the world. It is about us, the people, who are stuck in a city that is fighting against itself, an invisible war that keeps showing us death - bodies in the morning with no headlines in the newspapers.
