Nadège Mazars | The Other Columbia

Country of origin: France
Project location: Columbia
Program: Magnum Foundation Fund
Year: 2016

On November 24th, 2016, the FARC guerrilla and the Colombian government signed a new peace deal that would end one of the oldest internal conflict in the world.

The guerrilla is now preparing its 6.000 fighters to return to the civilian life. In the end, this peace deal did not pass the public referendum. In the aftermaths of the war, a key issue will be the future of these fighters. Another issue will be the peace deal implementation in the “Other Colombia,” this Colombia far away from the cities where war was omnipresent and from which most of the combatants are from.

This project shows an intimate point of the guerrillero’s daily lives and identities, with a particular focus on the women who represent around 35% of the combatants. It also shows the first steps towards the construction of a hopefully lasting peace.
