Zann Huizhen Huang | Remember Shatila
Country of origin: Singapore
Project location: Lebanon
Program: Magnum Foundation Fund
The Palestinian refugee camp of Shatila in southern Beirut stands as one of the forgotten monuments to the life of the refugee. Erected in the aftermath of the Arab-Israeli War of 1948, it has grown into a concrete maze where impoverished residents lack basic necessities like electricity, clean water, and sewage systems. And Shatila is growing. More Syrian Palestinians arrive every day, looking to escape the conflict back home and make Shatila their home. Zann Huizhen Huang will delve into the lives of the people of the camp where Palestinians still fight for basic civil rights like housing, education and the right to work. He will tell Shatila’s story by interviewing those who witnessed its violent past and by talking to those who seek to celebrate the beauty of life amidst chaos today.
