Stephen Ferry | The Poisoning of El Dorado

Country of origin: United States
Project location: Columbia
Program: Magnum Foundation Fund
Year: 2011

Stephen Ferry focuses on Colombia’s gold mines, a burgeoning industry in the wake of rising gold prices. Gold mining in Colombia has triggered an  “environmental and public health catastrophe” as mining techniques trigger massive deforestation and mercury/ cyanide contamination. He photographs mining communities around the Dagua River, which has suffered extensive environmental damage. Stephen is interested in individuals who have been threatened for protesting the consequences of gold mining.
