Rates of child marriage are estimated to be four times higher today among Syrian refugees than before the crisis in 2011––a result of war and forced migration. For many underage girls and their families who have settled in Turkey, left vulnerable after enduring years of conflict and trauma, early marriage is a path to security. With this project, my aim is to explore the experience of being a young girl in a foreign country, and the responsibilities they shoulder in establishing new roots.


Özge is a photographer based in Istanbul. She aims to explore underreported stories, focusing on gender and migration issues with an intimate approach. She is currently doing a master’s thesis on the “Visual Representation of Turkey in The New York Times
