Cynthia Santos Briones | Living in Sanctuary
Country of origin: Mexico
Project location: United States
Program: Photography in Collaboration
Collaborator: Anna Barsan
This project centers the emotional, psychological, and political impact of taking sanctuary to resist deportation, while showing the poignant, quiet, and tender moments of establishing home, routine, and community–imagery rarely depicted in the mainstream representation of asylum seekers.
Cinthya Santos Briones seeks to expand her previous work on the sanctuary movement, whereby immigrants at risk of deportation take refuge in churches, by traveling to other sanctuaries across the United States over a six month period. She intends to focus on the current migration crisis in the United States and how this has pushed faith communities and religious leaders to show solidarity and protect families. She plans to develop an interactive website and to exhibit in various spaces.
