Inge Morath

Join us at the National Arts Club for a conversation with Linda Gordon and Carole Naggar as we celebrate the publication of Inge Morath: An Illustrated Biography .

Inge Morath was one of the first women to join the renowned Magnum Photos cooperative. As a youth, she survived the trauma of Nazi Germany to become an extraordinary photographer.

Award-winning biographer Linda Gordon presents Morath as a woman traveling around the globe, often alone, living and working in conditions of hardship, while defying the conventions of female artists of her generation. Morath's photographs display her cosmopolitanism, a mix of her love of literature, fluency in multiple languages, and revulsion at Hitler's Germany. Through a Magnum assignment to document Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Misfits, she met and then married playwright Arthur Miller. Morath was the recipient of the NAC Medal of Honor in 2000.

Linda Gordon is a Professor of Humanities and History at NYU.  Among her many books is Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits. Carole Naggar is a writer, poet, and photography historian. She is editor of the Magnum Legacy Biography Series.
