A summer, two years ago, I spent July 4th, on the Coney Island pier watching the fireworks with Nigerian LGBT activists who had left Nigeria to start life afresh in America. As the fireworks began to light up the sky, they all looked up. It was such a hopeful almost sacred moment packed full of meaning. What an honor it was to be there, to feel my way through that slice of memory, that is forever in my mind. I was a summer fellow at the @magnumfoundation dipping my feet into the grit of what it means to choose to be a documentary photographer, with many questions, many ideas and many doubts. It was a safe space to be an insecure photographer. I will forever be grateful to have fallen into such a great bed for my insecurities, just out of grad school.
