Magnum Foundation is delighted to announce the launch of a new multiyear initiative supporting photographic projects that engage with archives and collective memory of Puerto Rico and its diaspora. This initiative is generously supported by the Mellon Foundation.
Since 2018, Magnum Foundation’s Counter Histories initiative has supported artists who elevate suppressed histories, reframe dominant narratives, and challenge the power structures embedded in archives. By exploring the creative possibilities offered by the gaps, absences, and silences in historical records, Counter Histories offers an expanded and collaborative approach to historical inquiry and photographic storytelling—and suggests the radical possibilities of alternative narratives.
Building on this longstanding initiative, Magnum Foundation is thrilled to be partnering with past Counter Histories fellow Christopher Gregory-Rivera on a new edition of the program focused on Puerto Rico and its diaspora. This collaboration emerges from Gregory-Rivera’s prior work rescuing and documenting Puerto Rico’s state surveillance archives, interrogating how the photographic record of government surveillance shaped public memory. Following the success of his participation in the program and recognizing the need for sustained support for artists engaging with Puerto Rico’s histories and visual culture, Gregory-Rivera initiated the development of a Puerto Rico-focused iteration of Counter Histories in collaboration with Magnum Foundation. The initiative is co-led through a partnership between Magnum Foundation and the newly launched Instituto de Observación Colectiva, an organization founded by Gregory-Rivera that aims to support visual practitioners in Puerto Rico and its diaspora.
For Magnum Foundation, this collaboration highlights our ongoing efforts to center grantee-driven initiatives as a key approach to our work. By supporting projects initiated by photographers who’ve participated in our past programs, we are able to better tailor future programming based on the needs and opportunities they identify within their communities. In doing so, we are also able to invest in our alumni as leaders within their communities and the field as a whole.
Alongside Gregory-Rivera, this initiative has been developed with the input of an esteemed advisory of photographers, curators, and historians with expertise in histories and visual cultures of Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and their diasporas, including: Abdiel Segarra, Aldeide Delgado, Ali Rosa-Salas, Deepak Lamba-Nieves, Iberia Pérez González, Jorell Meléndez-Badillo, and Laura Bravo López. We are also grateful to our ongoing working group of photographers and past grantees who shared their input on the open call and structure of the program.
As we launch Counter Histories: Puerto Rico, we are deeply grateful to the Mellon Foundation for their generous support of this initiative, and to the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Puerto Rico, who will host the closing symposium for the program. Magnum Foundation’s initial Counter Histories fellowships were developed with the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation.
At a time when public memory in Puerto Rico is under threat due to systemic disinvestment and cultural erasure, artists have taken a leading role in resisting this silencing. This initiative seeks to strengthen the role photography can play in building a collective visual archive that is useful for the present and future of the archipelago. The contested nature of history in the context of Puerto Rico is a fertile ground for artists to engage with ways of reimagining documentary and memory work. At this crucial crossroads, Counter Histories: Puerto Rico aims to support work that upends the historical representation by outsiders and centers the perspectives of those on and with ties to the archipelago.

Anunciando Contrahistorias: Puerto Rico
La Fundación Magnum se alegra en anunciar el lanzamiento de una nueva iniciativa plurianual en apoyo a proyectos fotográficos que abordan los archivos y la memoria colectiva de Puerto Rico y su diáspora. Esta iniciativa ha sido apoyada generosamente por la Fundación Mellon.
Desde el 2018, la iniciativa Counter Histories de la Fundación Magnum ha apoyado a artistas que resaltan historias suprimidas, replantean narrativas dominantes, y retan las estructuras de poder incrustadas en archivos. Al explorar las posibilidades creativas que ofrecen las omisiones, ausencias y silencios en los registros históricos, Counter Histories ofrece un enfoque ampliado y colaborativo de la investigación histórica y la narración fotográfica, y sugiere las posibilidades radicales de las narrativas alternativas.
Expandiendo desde nuestra larga trayectoria con esta iniciativa, la Fundación Magnum se enorgullece en colaborar con Christopher Gregory-Rivera, artista anteriormente becado de Counter Histories, en una nueva edición del programa enfocada en Puerto Rico y su diáspora. Esta colaboración nace del trabajo anterior de Gregory-Rivera rescatando y documentando archivos de vigilancia estatal en Puerto Rico, interrogando como el récord fotográfico de la vigilancia gubernamental le dio forma a la memoria pública. Luego del éxito de su participación en el programa, y reconociendo la necesidad de respaldo constante para artistas que abordan la historia y cultura visual de Puerto Rico, Gregory-Rivera, en colaboración con la Fundación Magnum, inició el desarrollo de una versión de Counter Histories enfocada en Puerto Rico. La iniciativa es co-dirigida a través de una asociación entre la Fundación Magnum y el recién formado Instituto de Observación Colectiva, una organización fundada por Gregory-Rivera que busca apoyar practicantes del arte visual en Puerto Rico y su diáspora.
Para la Fundación Magnum, esta colaboración resalta nuestros continuos esfuerzos de enfocar iniciativas impulsadas por becaries como un aspecto clave de nuestro trabajo. Al apoyar proyectos iniciados por fotógrafes que han participado en programas anteriores, logramos mejorar la programación futura basado en las necesidades y oportunidades que elles logran identificar dentro de sus comunidades. Al hacer esto también podemos invertir en exalumnos como líderes dentro de sus comunidades y en su ámbito de trabajo en general.
Junto a Gregory-Rivera, esta iniciativa se ha desarrollado con el valorado insumo de fotografes, curadores e historiadores con alto conocimiento sobre la historia y cultura visual de Puerto Rico, el caribe y sus diásporas, incluyendo a Abdiel Segarra, Aldeide Delgado, Ali Rosa-Salas, Deepak Lamba-Nieves, Iberia Pérez González, Jorell Meléndez-Badillo, y Laura Bravo López. También estamos agradecides al creciente grupo de trabajo conformado por fotografes y becaries pasados que compartieron su opinión sobre la convocatoria abierta y la estructura del programa.
Con el lanzamiento de Contrahistorias: Puerto Rico, agradecemos profundamente a la Fundación Mellon por su generoso apoyo de esta iniciativa y al Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico quien será el hogar del simposio de clausura para este programa. Las becas iniciales de la iniciativa Counter Histories de Magnum Foundation fueron desarrolladas con el apoyo generoso de la Fundación Henry Luce.
En un momento en el que la memoria pública de Puerto Rico se ve amenazada por la desinversión sistémica y el borrado cultural, les artistas han liderado la resistencia a ese silenciamiento. Esta iniciativa busca fortalecer el rol de la fotografía para construir un archivo visual colectivo que sea útil para el presente y el futuro del archipiélago. La naturaleza controvertida de la historia en el contexto de Puerto Rico es un terreno fértil para que les artistas participen en reimaginar el trabajo documental y de memoria. En este cruce crítico, Contrahistorias: Puerto Rico busca la oportunidad de apoyar trabajo que revierta la representación histórica de les de afuera y se enfoque en las perspectivas de quienes viven en o tienen vínculos con el archipiélago.
