Tif Ng

Magnum Foundation is pleased to announce Tif Ng (伍家恩) as our newest Magnum Foundation Fellow. Throughout the Fall of 2021, Tif will split her time between supporting Magnum Foundation’s programming and pursuing her project interviewing and photographing women of New York’s Chinatowns.

Currently based in New York City, Tif is an American-born Cantonese photographer raised in Hong Kong and Beijing. Her research and arts-based practice includes documentary photography, and manipulation of archival materials. Her work explores the relationship between documented and fictionalized memory, themes of longing and belonging, and Cantonese family histories.

For her fellowship project, Tif is using food as a portal to gain insight into the histories of various generations of Chinese women living in New York City. As food is inextricably tied with memory and feelings of home, she hopes to give people space to express longing and nostalgia. Tif is interested in creating work that is driven by the subject’s interests through portraiture, and documentation of what they deem valuable to their histories.

Tif shared, “during my time as a fellow, I most look forward to having guidance in developing my project and learning about non-traditional methods of creating and presenting of photo narratives. I’m also excited to learn about and be part of the planning and execution process for MF programming, as well as meeting different thinkers and practitioners in the photo field.”

The Magnum Foundation Fellowship offers mentorship and stipends to early-career practitioners who are at a critical moment in their development as photographers. This fellowship is designed for New York City-based photographers to work in the Magnum Foundation office while also developing their own photographic project in the city that demonstrates a commitment to social issues and community based work.
