In partnership with the American Jewish World Service, Magnum Foundation grantee Esther Ruth Mbabazi collaborated with women at the Gulu for Women With Disabilities Union (GUWODU) in Northern Uganda to creatively portray their own stories. The women designed their clothing and backdrops, and chose the images they felt best represented them, often embracing the full-length portraits—telling Mbabazi that “this shows me as I am in my full existence, my full body, as I am.”

I was tired of the images I was seeing out there, especially here in Uganda, where [people with disabilities] are robbed of their personalities...They’re photographed as people who can’t do anything. I didn’t want my images to look like that.
