gearing up for April 29th Photography Expanded panel

Magnum Foundation is gearing up for the April 29th Photography, Expanded panel discussion, The Story of Data: Visualization, Mapping, and Photography, where we’ll explore how social-impact photography projects might employ the digital strategies found in data science, geography, journalism and critical design.

We’ll be posting a dynamic list of exemplary projects and resources for photographers to extend their practice beyond the still image and employ a range of digital strategies.

“Geolocation – Tributes to the Data Stream,” by Nate Larson & Marni Shindleman is a project that uses publicly available embedded GPS information in Twitter updates to track the locations of user posts in the physical world. With select coordinates mined from public Twitter feeds, Larson and Shindleman mark each location with a photograph and include the original tweet below the final image. The work situates digital communication in the real world, making palpable the intimacy of these virtual encounters.
